Construction of active buttresses on struts.
This work has started with the construction of three struts. Two of them are external and inclined and have been inserted 45 meters down, deep into the ground; their main function is to sustain the horizontal force of the slope. The third strut instead, is perpendicular.
It goes 7 meters down and has the function to support the weight of the buttress. A steel beam is suspended in steel slots, one affixed to each of two inclined struts. It supports three metal tubes that are attached to the retaining wall by means of metal plates.
Considering that the earth movement of the slope is quite significant, we decided to make the buttresses work immediately by using two hydraulic rams in order to apply compression. These have been placed at the base of the two external temporary tubes. It has been possible then to make pressure at the base of the third tube by means of a big screw connected with the steel beam positioned on the slots. The two external tubes have been subsequently removed.
A metal carpentry has been put together around the central strut while a RCK 350 concrete casting has been laid. The concrete wall and the new retaining structure have been joined together by using some metal nails fixed by means of epoxy resin.
